At Zincor, a feasibility study was completed in late 2008 on using advanced technology to boost capacity while bringing Zincor closer to being a zero-waste discharge operation. Top submerged lance fuming technology – commercialised in the early 1990s by Zincor’s partner Korea Zinc Corporation – includes two furnaces and a gas-cleaning plant. The granulated slag by-product can be used as an additive in making cement while recoverable heat from off-gas is enough to generate around 8MW of electricity.
