Case study – Arnot takes action

Employee exposure to noise and dust has been decreased at Arnot through a range of initiatives including:

  • Noise:
    • Silencers installed on scrubber and force fans
    • Maintenance of engineering appliances
    • Surface machine drivers working inside enclosed shelters
    • Training, enforcement and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by all employees

  • Dust – a 90% reduction in the number of people exposed to dust was achieved by:
    • Keeping main travelling roads wet
    • Investigating abnormal dust results
    • Extraction pipes at tail end in areas where high dust is created
    • Increasing section ventilation, with sections ventilated independently.

Collectively, these initiatives are expected to reduce employee exposure to dust and achieve the set target of zero noise-induced hearing loss.
