Note 1: description of major incidents
  • At Muldersvlei substation in the Western grid, the Kraaifontein 66kV breaker failed catastrophically at 18:21 on 3 May 2007. The subsequent failure of transformers number 4 and number 5 132/66/22kV resulted in an interruption of 29.39MW for 1 324 minutes (SM = 1,178SM).

  • At Athene substation in the Eastern grid, the 132kV buscoupler red phase current transformer faulted, causing a buszone operation, resulting in an interruption of 1 000MW for 39 minutes (SM = 1,181SM) at 11:00 on 21 August 2007.

  • At Athene substation in the Eastern grid, the 132kV buscoupler white phase current transformer T faulted, causing a buszone operation, resulting in an interruption of 1 200MW for 44 minutes (SM = 1,598SM) at 11:11 on 16 September 2007.

  • The Acacia-Muldersvlei number 1 − 400kV line in the Western grid faulted at 20:42 on 1 February 2008 due to an earth wire breaking, causing a sustained line fault. At the same time, the Acacia-Koeberg number 1 - 400kV line was also out due to a fault in the GIS chamber at Koeberg. This resulted in an interruption of 450MW for 233 minutes (SM = 4,809SM).

  • At Arnot substation in the North Eastern grid, the Rietkuil transformer number 2 - 275/22kV failed, resulting in an interruption of 40MW for 3 516 minutes (SM = 4,257SM) at 15:57 on 25 February 2008.

The following load shedding events due to generation constraints were recorded for the 2007/8 financial year:
  • On 23 May 2007, load-shedding was carried out in various parts of northern South Africa due to generation constraints. A total of 0.511SM was interrupted to parts of the country.
  • From 9 to 12 October 2007, load shedding was carried out in various parts of South Africa due to generation shortages, wet coal due to heavy rains, and fuel shortages at Ankerlig (unable to refuel during the night due to poor lighting). A total of 72.007SM was interrupted to various parts of the country.
  • On 26 October 2007, load shedding was carried out due to the loss of generation at Songo, and units were out at Tutuka, Duvha, Hendrina, Arnot, and Camden. A total of 12.227SM was interrupted to parts of the country via rotational load shedding.
  • From 13 to 16 November 2007, load-shedding was carried out in various parts of South Africa due to generation shortages at Majuba. A total of 14.981SM was interrupted to various parts of the country.
