Aveng and its subsidiaries are members of many industry bodies and participate in industry associations worldwide. During the year under review, Group companies won a number of industry and customer awards for outstanding performance.

  • The Aveng Group qualified for the 2008 SRI Index and was identified as one of the best 21 performers by meeting the relevant environmental criteria as well as all the core indicators in the social and governance areas.
  • The Aveng Group’s 2008 annual report was once again recognised in the Excellent Category in Ernst & Young Inc.’s survey “Excellence in Corporate Reporting".
  • The Aveng Group demonstrated its commitment to environmental sustainability with its first submission to the 2009 Carbon Disclosure Project.
  • Grinaker-LTA achieved the OSHAS 18001 and ISO 14001 certification in its civil engineering business unit.
  • Grinaker-LTA, in joint venture with Interbeton, completed the Nelson Mandela Multipurpose Stadium in Port Elizabeth – one of the fastest built stadiums in the world.
  • Grinaker-LTA took top honours at the Concrete Society of South winning the Overall Civil Engineering Project category for the Berg River Dam, while Soccer City was the winner in both the Overall Building Project and the Concrete in Architecture categories.
  • Grinaker-LTA was judged the Winner for the “Construction World’s Dam Project.
  • McConnell Dowell was recognised as the “Contractor of the Month” by its client, ExxonMobil, in recognition of the exceptional safety performance on the IRF project in Singapore.
  • McConnell Dowell won the 2008 Engineer’s Division, for Excellence in Infrastructure and Building Projects for the Bakewell Underpass Project.
  • McConnell Dowell was awarded the New Zealand Constructors Federation Award in Category 5 – projects exceeding $20 million for the Tahuna Ocean Outfall project in Dunedin, New Zealand.
  • MERSETA (Metal Engineering and Related Services Education and Training Authority) recognised Aveng Manufacturing and Trident Steel as MERSETA Top Training companies. When selecting recipients of the award, the MERSETA looked for companies which have made a tangible difference to developing skills in the sector and who are committed to training and upskilling their workforces.
  • Duraset achieved the ISO 9002 in its Geotech division.
